Dear FCFCF Members and Friends: Thank you so much for drawing attention to the plight of children caught in the criminal justice system through your participation in the Juvenile Justice Sabbath 2009, “A Call for a Juvenile Justice System that Heals." Our efforts helped to raise awareness of the needs of incarcerated children and their families, who are so frequently overlooked in our communities. We united congregations of all faiths to raise awareness about incarcerated children: Over 200 faith based organizations in California participated by offering prayers, sermons, services, meditation, and other opportunities for congregations to learn about and reflect on the needs of these often forgotten children and their families. Prayers were offered for everyone who has been affected by crime, including victims of crimes, offenders and families of both. Religious leaders also distributed Juvenile Justice Sabbath Fact Sheets to their members. Our message educated the larger community about incarcerated children: Your efforts succeeded in educating your congregations about building stronger communities through supporting children and families and also reached the larger community. In California, thousands of community members were educated when the Sabbath was covered by both English and Spanish newspapers and two radio shows. We thank you for your participation in the Juvenile Justice Sabbath by devoting time to children who are so in need of our attention. |
